Reflexology works by stimulating areas of the feet, face and hands which correlate to different parts of the body. A form of reflexology was documented in Egyptian illustrations in 2,500 BC and massage techniques of the feet and hands are depicted in Indian, Chinese and native Indian history. The background and methods mostly stem from something called ‘zone therapy’ developed by Dr. William Fitzgerald and I have attached an article for your reading.
In early 1900’s, Eunice Ingam (an American physiotherapist), pinpointed specific areas to their systems/body parts working on the basis of stimulation to that area to relieve/reduce pain and discomfort or help alleviate issues within the body. Since then, various techniques, reflexology charts and influences from Chinese, Indian and native American medicine have been adopted and adapted.
But reflexology is more than that….. it’s not just about stimulating or focusing on one area; it’s about approaching the body in its whole form and influencing a homeostatic balance so that all of the systems work in harmony. So, for instance, a client who may be trying to conceive, will not just need work on her reproductive system, she will also need a focus on her adrenals to help reduce stress.
It is about positive touch and it is also about having that protected time with no interruptions or demands where you can relax, de-stress, unwind and allow your body to do its own natural healing.
